Our Story

How it all started...

Established 1867 | West Bottoms

In 1867, just two years after the end of the Civil War, a faithful group of believers gathered in the West Bottoms of Kansas City with a vision rooted in freedom, faith, and community. In a time when hope was fragile and opportunity was limited, they built more than a church — they built a spiritual foundation for generations to come.
From its earliest days, Pleasant Green was a place of refuge, resilience, and revival. It became a sacred space where families worshiped, leaders were developed, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ was preached with conviction and power.
Through seasons of growth, transition, challenge, and renewal, our church has remained anchored in its mission: to reach, equip, and transform lives through Christ. What began in the West Bottoms as a small gathering of faithful believers has grown into a multicultural, multigenerational movement impacting Kansas City and beyond.
For over a century and a half, God has sustained this ministry — strengthening it through every era and positioning it for continued generational impact.
And the story is still being written.

Expanding the vision...

In 2001, Reverend Jarvis L. Collier was called to serve as Pastor of Pleasant Green Baptist Church, ushering in a new season of vision, growth, and community impact. With a heart for discipleship and leadership development, he has faithfully shepherded the congregation for over 25 years — strengthening its historic foundation established in 1867 while expanding its reach throughout Kansas City and beyond.
Under his leadership, Pleasant Green continues to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, equip leaders, empower families, and build generational legacy.
And the legacy continues.

Where we are headed...

As we honor our past, we are boldly building our future. Pleasant Green is committed to expanding its impact — spiritually, structurally, and generationally.
We are focused on deepening discipleship, strengthening families, equipping leaders, and embracing innovation to reach the next generation. Our vision is to continue serving Kansas City and the broader community with excellence, unity, and unwavering faith.
Rooted in a legacy that began in 1867 and strengthened through decades of faithful leadership, we move forward with clarity and conviction — committed to being on the Go & on the Grow.
The mission remains the same.
The vision is expanding.
The future is bright.
